Seattle Band Map: A Cartographic Study of Musical Incest

So, for the better part of the last 6 months, Rachel Ratner(KEXP, Butts, Partman Parthorse, General Awesomeness) and I have been curating(she), designing(he) and displaying(us) an 8' x 12' map and study of how bands in Seattle are connected by shared members. All the bands need to do in order to form a connection is to have released a recording in any fashion or played a show together.

It is incredible!

Follow the band map here, Seattle Band Map Blog

It will be traversing through different parts of town throughout the summer. It is a community installation, so we are looking for and encouring the music scene at large to contribute and fix any connections which they know of. Read more about it at the blog. We hope it is a never ending connection.

the beets, cmrtyz, recording

Wow, this was in may?! holy smokes, but the beets were blowing through town and Carlos and Ty, from cmrtyz ask Real Fake to record a beets song for their first batch of 7"s which they are releasing with psychic lunch records.

It was quite a fun day and effortless recording, those beets are delicious!

The records are now being released by cmrtyz, check em out at stores about the country (psychedelic summer pop-up store in NYC, rough trade in the UK and born bad in france...and guaranteed more as cmrtyz make their way about the world!)

cheating!

Excited to be a part of this one. Andrew asked me to make the poster for it and now I am playing drums with championship belt. Perhaps a new vein for the band map? Or maybe it's just the business. Medical!

slow dance

Can you spot the waldo? Medical!

Rib Cages was a rollicking delight. Hope we get a chance to play with them again in portland. I want to pick up/hear the cassette they had just sold out of with recordings of them as a three piece/new songs. I also finally figured out the trick to the copier machine in my dining room, well at least the trick to successfully load the paper so it won't jam. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead.

Forgot about this Pisser!

Xerox, hand lettering and hand screened, 11x17

LiveFastDie killed and I think deserved to have a girl pissing orange blood on their poster.

The Standing Giants

Xerox Found images and hand lettering, 11x17
More from the dictionary of medical diagnosis. I will have at least 14 confirmed diseases by the time I am done cutting up this book. Should be a great show to boot!

Medical Pathos

Xerox and Markers
Baby Portraits of the Sick.
Found this image in an old medical diagnosis book that I was cutting up to make a hideaway book. So many scary yet serene images in it. This one needs to be screenprinted I do believe, but it sure is fun having an office xerox machine at your house.

A poster who was never used

11x8 1/2 hand drawn
I like this one quite a bit.

Sasquatch 2009 - Blind Pilot

22x24
Every artist performing at Sasquatch had a poster made for them. The show displaying said posters was pretty amazing. I remember being a little low on cash and eating free molly moon's ice cream for dinner. A sweet girl named molly also bought be a drink that evening. Hip hooray for mollies.

Cheeseburger Picnic: The Reality

17x18 or so. Hand-screened and printed.
In celebration of Aaron's 33rd birthday. It was quite a celebration to say the least. Although the chicken fingers did get a bit burnt, at least there weren't any piss jugs on hand.

The Satori Tryptch

3 - 11x17. Hand cut, found images and xerox. Coloring in photoshop.

3 posters for each of the Satori Group's shows this season. Lettering to be added later I do suppose. My favorite is in the top right. Something about cutting out those dwarfs gave me pleasure. I also had to check whether it was dwarfs or dwarves. Grammar is beginning to elude me.

Yeah Girl! Strap your Cock on

Screenprinted with found image.
Yeah Girl! Commissioned T-Shirt for Jill Labieniec.
One of my favorites!

Fag Cop and the Smelly Harolds

11x17, Handscreened and printed with found image
Ridiculous show! Francis Harold and the Holograms were nasty and smelt like that cow. A fitting smell. Pretty much the first I had seen/heard Fag Cop. Great rock band. Played drums in championship belt for this one. Also fairly ridiculous.

A Pair of Screenprints

11x17
Hand Made and Screened, some xerox collage on the police teeth poster.

Le face from California. Pretty good angry punk rock. I felt bad for the singer because he tried to vomit on stage and nothing really came out. All finger, no show. The band was pretty good. One or two songs that I recognized from a tape Jeremy made me and I enjoyed those, the rest of the songs weren't noteworthy. The Police Teeth won the stranger's POTW, I enjoyed making that one a great deal. Kind of came together piece by piece. I remember the other bands seemingly liked arbitron a lot more then I liked their bands.

The Schlong in the Stone

11x17, Tracing and hand lettering, colored in photoshop.
Double Dagger. The reasons why I like these gentlemen so should not be written on the internet. Baltimore is a shit town.
